Effects of The Great Awakening
- led to the founding of "new light" centers; Princeton, Brown, Rutgers, and Dartmouth
- increased the number and competitiveness of American churches
- encouraged a fresh wave of missionary work among Indians and black slaves


The Zenger Trial

- On the night of the revolution printers printed out false pamphlets and journals
- One particular case; John Peter Zenger was taken to court and charged with Seditious Libel (criticism of governor)
- Judge begged jury to make guilty, but they went against him. Zenger was proved not guilty.
- Freedom of the press was basically assured in America after this case.

Colonial Society and Culture

- The population of the 13 colonies was the most diverse (race wise), compared to the rest of the world.
- Most people were Protestant (Pennsylvania Dutch).
- Anyone who was willing to work could make money easily.
- There was a difference in class...
- The aristocrats (rich farmers, lawyers, and clergymen) had the majority of the power.
- The plantation owners in the South had many slaves.
- Black slaves were at the bottom of the class because they had no freedom.
- Slavery was a big issue because some colonies supported it and others didn’t.

Scots-Irish

- Migrated from Ireland
- 7% of the population of the colonies was Scots-Irish
- They occupied from PA-Georgia also known as the "Great Wagon Road"
- They were already good at being colonists, and they were great frontiersman
- Led the armed march between colonies
- Andrew Jackson was Scots-Irish
- Religion was very important to them
